High School Dragon Boat Race Postponed
Please note: This race has been postponed until June 2017 to give schools more time to recruit team members. More details will be communicated this fall.
All high schools in Simcoe County are invited to enter a team into our first Simcoe County High School Dragon Boat Championship! Happening on the morning of Wednesday, September 28, this event is open to all students from all grades of all high schools in Simcoe County. The race will run rain or shine, but if it is too windy it will take place on Thursday, September 29.
Race day and all practices will take place in Barrie on Kempenfelt Bay. Boats will start from the Heritage Docks next to Heritage Park.
- No experience necessary
- One team per high school
- Maximum of 12 teams so register early
- 21 team members required per team (10 boy and 10 girl paddlers plus 1 drummer)
- $40 per student, which includes 2 practice sessions and race day
- Students must have completed an OPHEA swim test to participate
- Open to current Grade 8’s starting Grade 9 in September 2016 (with OPHEA swim test)
- Races begin at 9:30 a.m. and will be completed by 11:30 a.m.
School Team Registration
Please email your completed registration form (below) with requested practice times to Katherina.email@example.com by Friday, September 9, along with payment of the $400 deposit. This is payable by credit card or by a cheque made out to Barrie Public Library. Your full team roster of student paddlers, and signed waivers for each paddler, are due by Tuesday, September 13. These can be scanned and emailed as PDFs to Katherina.Symes@barrie.ca.
The cost is $40 per student, with 20 students per boat. There is no fee for the drummer. A school deposit of $400 is due by Friday, September 9. This is payable by credit card or by a cheque made out to Barrie Public Library. The remaining balance of $400 is due by September 27.
This above costs does not include transportation to or from practices or the race. Please contact firstname.lastname@example.org if you are out of town and have transportation concerns.
To schedule your practices, please enter your top 4 preferred time slots on your registration form, and email to Katherina.email@example.com. Requested times are not guaranteed, and are based on a first-come, first-served basis. Each team may participate in two practices.
Practice time slots are available on September 13, 15, 20, 22 and 27, at 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Preference will be given to out of town schools for the 4:30 – 5:30 time slot. Efforts will be made to group out-of-town schools from the same town together so transportation can be shared.
