Due to popular demand, we've added 3 English Conversation Circle dates through the summer! Join us June 26, July 24 and August 28 from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. at our Downtown Branch. They'll take place on the Rooftop Reading Garden if weather permits, or inside the flex space on the main floor if not. 

English Conversation Circle is a chance to make new friends, practice your English and learn about life and culture in Canada.

We are holding a special National Film Board screening for Rendez-vous de la Francophonie (RVF) on March 22, which will be held during our Wednesday evening French Reading Club from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. We'll be showing two National Film Board documentaries on the theme of ‘Holding on and letting go, from Acadie to Vancouver’ to celebrate RVF. The films are French with English subtitles.

Freedom to Read Week is almost here! Celebrated from February 26 - March 4, it's is an annual event that encourages Canadians to think about and reaffirm their commitment to intellectual freedom, which is guaranteed to them under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

Freedom to Read Week takes place each year to recognize our right to intellectual freedom. This year, Freedom to Read Week is February 26 - March 4.

Our 15th annual Barrie Dragon Boat Festival takes place on Saturday, August 26. Planning is underway for a special year - we'll be celebrating our 15th anniversary as well as Canada's 150th year! 

Registration is now open for returning teams that participated in 2016. We have a limited number of team spaces, so register early to avoid disappointment. Register online at http://barriedragonboatfestival.ca/. 

General registration for new teams opens on February 13.

BPL is looking for volunteers who speak and read French fluently to assist with our French reading club which is currently being hosted at the Downtown Branch. The ideal candidate would be available Wednesday evenings in February from 6:45-8:45 p.m. and enjoy promoting French conversation. If you haven't come to check out our Tinker Lab yet, what are you waiting for!? 

Right inside the front doors at our Downtown branch, you'll find a place of discovery, creativity and imagination. Watch the 3D printer create something neat, play with the Ozo Bots, Dash robots or Meccano. Create something on the sewing machine, or take the K'NEX roller coaster for a ride! It's all about learning and experiencing new things in a hands-on environment. All ages are welcome, as there is something for everyone.

We're excited to announce that we're a part of the TackleShare Program, giving new and young anglers the opportunity to go fishing at no cost!

Visit the Downtown branch (60 Worsley St.) to sign out a rod and reel and an assortment of tackle the same way you would borrow library books. It's a great way to get some time in the outdoors while learning a new skill. Head down to the beach or dock and enjoy some quality time with your family! 

Fishing gear will be available throughout the summer.

The Barrie Public Library is the proud host of Barrie's largest waterfront festival, the Barrie Dragon Boat Festival. This is an annual event that is made possible by the support of our sponsors, volunteers and community teams. The Festival is held at the City of Barrie's beautiful Heritage Park, with racing on the waters of Kempenfelt Bay.

National Canadian Film Day is on Wednesday, April 20! 

We'll be celebrating having 2 screenings of 3 Canadian short films from 12 - 1 and 1-2 pm at our Downtown location:

Momentum (20 minutes)
A sweeping, moving tribute to Canada's stunning geography and rich cultural heritage. 

The Railrodder (25 minutes)
This short film from director Gerald Potterton (Heavy Metal) stars Buster Keaton in one of the last films of his long career. As "the railrodder", Keaton crosses Canada from east to west on a railway track speeder.

Let’s get ready to rumble! We’ve got an exciting interactive display coming to the Library this holiday break – the Prodomax Robot Rumble!

On December 28th and 30th we’ll have an interactive display set up for kids to watch and play with SumoBots - small robots designed to ‘wrestle’ each other in a mini-sumo ring. They’re designed from scratch and some parts are even made with a 3D printer!

From midday Tuesday, March 17 to midnight on April 1, Barrie Public Library card holders will be able to borrow and read the autobiography e-book of Shakespeare Saved My Life: Ten Years in Solitary with the Bard by Laura Bates. This is a riveting true-life tale of Shakespeare professor and prison volunteer Laura Bates as she teaches about the playwright in supermax solitary confinement, developing a friendship with a brilliant, dangerous convict.

When placing holds on TV series, or other multi-DVD sets when they are “on order”, any hold placed will automatically go on disc 1 of the set.

Once the individual discs are listed in the catalogue, you can place holds on the other discs in the set as you are ready for them.

Accessing our new catalogue is easy.

Just click on the Catalogue button on our Home page. This will take you right to the Catalogue page.

One of the new features of our Catalogue is Catalogue Plus. Clicking on this tab when you search expands your search to include material from our Online Resources such as Databases. We hope this will make it easier for you to access this type of material to meet your information needs.

The Library is in the process of changing to a new Catalogue System.
* From now until our new system launches on December 9th, the library will not be placing any holds for material.
* From now through December 10th, due dates have been shifted. Any material that would normally be due from December 5th through December 10th will now be due on December 11th. 
* Renewals cannot be done through our online system. If you need to renew material for any reason before our new system is up and running, please ask staff for assistance.

You may be hearing about Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for the first time as the 'Ice Bucket Challenge' is raising awareness about this fatal neurodegenerative disease. "ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease) is a progressive neuromuscular disease in which nerve cells die and leave voluntary muscles paralyzed. The Canadian Library Association / Association Canadienne des Bibliothèques has announced the 2014 Young Adult Book Award winner and Honour Book for books published in 2013. Established in 1980, the Young Adult Book Award recognizes an author of an outstanding Canadian English-language work of fiction (novel or collection of short stories) that appeals to young adults between the ages of 13 and 18.

Poems must be original and 24 lines or less.  Creative Writing must be original and 850 words or less.

There are categories for children, teens, and adults.  Prizes will be awarded.

CBC's competition for creative non-fiction closes on 1 February!

If you have a story to tell about life experiences or observations you can enter and stand to win a prize of $6000. The winner's story will be featured in Air Canada’s enRoute magazine and on the Canada Writes website. He or she will also be awarded a two-week residency at The Banff Centre's Leighton Artists' Colony.

This will be the 14th Teen Read Week held at the Barrie Public Library and it’s a great way to celebrate Canadian Library Month.   The theme this year is Seek the Unknown @ your Library™, which encourages teens to read something just for the fun of it!  Fill out activity sheets in the Young Adult area for a chance to win a free book in our daily draw!  Our infamous rubber chicken is hiding somewhere in the library.

On Friday, May 4, 60 teens celebrated National Youth Week with a Bands Night at the downtown library, aptly titled “May the Fourth be with You!” 6 local bands performed a variety of music in the Young Adult area of the library until 11pm!
