Getting a Job

High school is usually when teens start looking for their first job. It helps you have a bit of spending money, or to save for your education.

Resumes and Cover Letters

Getting a job mean you need to "sell" your experience, qualifications and abilities to potential employers. You may not think you need a resume because you don’t have any actual job experience to put on a resume but taking the time to put together even a simple resume will assist with your job search.

A resume tells a prospective employer that you have put some effort into your job search and your resume highlights information about yourself that you want the employer to remember. Emphasize your skills and accomplishments if you have very little work experience – even babysitting younger children indicates that you are responsible and trustworthy. Also be sure to include any volunteer experience on your resume.

You will also need a cover letter. A cover letter is a key marketing tool and you should always include one with your resume. Your cover letter needs to be dynamic so that the employer will be interested in reading your accompanying resume. Be sure to have someone else read your cover letter to ensure spelling and details are accurate and correct.

Job Hunting

Once you have your resume ready, it's time to hit the pavement and start applying for a job. What are employers looking for? How do you find the right job that will match your interests and skills? Finding a job takes planning, effort and determination. You can check job banks, and classified advertisements. You may also need to pursue alternative ways to find work, such as networking with adults (family, friends, neighbours, teachers), or contacting employers directly.

If you succeed in obtaining employment, your employer will require that you have your own Social Insurance number. Find out where to get one.

The Interview

Now that you've applied, hopefully you will be called for an interview. Interviews don`t have to be stressful. Just follow these tips to be prepared.

  • Learn to research companies and the applicable position for which you are applying
  • The key to better interviews is practice, practice, practice Mock interviews are one way of practicing so check with your local career centre or high school guidance counselor to see if they will assist you with this
  • Remember to be confident and enthusiastic during the interview
  • Appearance matters – you should look neat and presentable. Looking and dressing your best is important in order to make a good first impression
  • You may also want to look at books or websites with sample interview questions so you can practice some of your answers beforehand
